Politicians Want to Protect us From the Evils of On-Line Gambling Part 3



This is part 3 of a multipart series of articles regarding proposed anti-gambling legislation. In this article, I continue the discussion of the reasons claimed to make this legislation necessary, and the facts that exist in the real world, including the Jack Abramoff connection and the addictive nature of online gambling.


The legislators are trying to protect us from something, or are they? The whole thing seems a little confusing to say the least.


As mentioned in previous articles, the House, and the Senate, are once again considering the issue of "Online Gambling". Bills have been submitted by Congressmen Goodlatte and Leach, and also by Senator Kyl.


The bill being put forward by Rep. Goodlatte, The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, has the stated intention of updating the Wire Act to outlaw all forms of online gambling, to make it illegal for a gambling business to accept credit and electronic transfers, and to force ISPs and Common Carriers to block access to gambling related sites at the request of law enforcement.


Just as does Rep. Goodlatte, Sen. Kyl, in his bill, Prohibition on Funding of Unlawful Internet Gambling, makes it illegal for gambling businesses to accept credit cards, electronic transfers, checks and other forms of payment for the purpose on placing illegal bets, but his bill does not address those that place bets.


The bill submitted by Rep. Leach, The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, is basically a copy of the bill submitted by Sen. Kyl. It focuses on preventing gambling businesses from accepting credit cards, electronic transfers, checks, and other payments, and like the Kyl bill makes no changes to what is currently legal, or illegal.


In a quote from Goodlatte we have "Jack Abramoff's total disregard for the legislative process has allowed Internet gambling to continue thriving into what is now a twelve billion-dollar business which not only hurts individuals and their families but makes the economy suffer by draining billions of dollars from the United States and serves as a vehicle for money laundering."


There are several interesting points here.


First of all, we have a little misdirection about Jack Abramoff and his disregard for the legislative process. This comment, and others that have been made, follow the logic that; 1) Jack Abramoff was opposed to these bills, 2) Jack Abramoff was corrupt, 3) to avoid being associated with corruption you should vote for these bills. This is of course absurd. If we followed this logic to the extreme, we should go back and void any bills that Abramoff supported, and enact any bills that he opposed, regardless of the content of the bill. Legislation should be passed, or not, based on the merits of the proposed legislation, not based on the reputation of one individual.


As well, when Jack Abramoff opposed previous bills, he did so on behalf of his client eLottery, attempting to get the sale of lottery tickets over the internet excluded from the legislation. Ironically, the protections he was seeking are included in this new bill, since state run lotteries would be excluded. Jack Abramoff therefore would probably support this legislation since it gives him what he was looking for. That does not stop Goodlatte and others from using Abramoff's recent disgrace as a means to make their bill look better, thus making it not just an anti-gambling bill, but somehow an ant-corruption bill as well, while at the same time rewarding Abramoff and his client.


Next, is his statement that online gambling "hurts individuals and their families". I presume that what he is referring to here is problem gambling. Let's set the record straight. Only a small percentage of gamblers become problem gamblers, not a small percentage of the population, but only a small percentage of gamblers.


In addition, Goodlatte would have you believe that Internet gambling is more addictive than casino gambling. Sen. Kyl has gone so far as to call online gambling "the crack cocaine of gambling", attributing the quote to some un-named researcher. To the contrary, researchers have shown that gambling on the Internet is no more addictive than gambling in a casino. As a matter of fact, electronic gambling machines, found in casinos and race tracks all over the country are more addictive than online gambling.


In research by N. Dowling, D. Smith and T. Thomas at the School of Health Sciences, RMIT University, Bundoora, Australia "There is a general view that electronic gaming is the most 'addictive' form of gambling, in that it contributes more to causing problem gambling than any other gambling activity. As such, electronic gaming machines have been referred to as the 'crack-cocaine' of gambling".


As to Sen. Kyls claim about "crack cocaine", quotes at http://www.alternet.org/drugreporter/20733/ include "Cultural busybodies have long known that in post this-is-your-brain-on-drugs America, the best way to win attention for a pet cause is to compare it to some scourge that already scares the bejesus out of America". And "During the 1980s and '90s, it was a little different. Then, a troubling new trend wasn't officially on the public radar until someone dubbed it "the new crack cocaine." And "On his Vice Squad weblog, University of Chicago Professor Jim Leitzel notes that a Google search finds experts declaring slot machines (The New York Times Magazine), video slots (the Canadian Press) and casinos (Madison Capital Times) the "crack cocaine of gambling," respectively. Leitzel's search also found that spam email is "the crack cocaine of advertising" (Sarasota, Fla. Herald Tribune), and that cybersex is a kind of sexual "spirtual crack cocaine" (Focus on the Family)".


As we can see, calling something the "crack cocaine" has become a meaningless metaphor, showing only that the person making the statement feels it is important. But then we knew that Rep. Goodlatte, Rep. Leach and Sen. Kyl felt that the issue was important or they wouldn't have brought the proposed legislation forward.


In the next article, I will continue coverage of the issues raised by politicians who are against online gambling, and provide a different perspective to their rhetoric, covering the "drain on the economy" caused by online gambling, and the notion of money laundering.

Gambling Strategies



Below is a few strategies I have picked up over the years
for gambling with the more popular casinos.

BlackJack Strategies As with standard blackjack, the first
thing to take into consideration when playing online
blackjack is: "How many decks of cards are being used?" This
number can vary from 1 to as many as 15, depending on the
casino you are visiting. Single deck blackjack is hard to
find, but it is the simplest to keep track of. You simply
chart the cards as you see them.

Here is a sample:

The benefit of online blackjack is that there is no dealer
to watch you taking notes. With a visible chart of the cards
played, blackjack strategies can easily be put into place.

Take note of the chart above. Cards with a designation of
"10" (that is the 10's, Jacks, Queens and Kings) number 16
out of 52 cards. About halfway through the deck you will be
able to accurately extrapolate the dealer's down card and
bet appropriately. This is a good time to make off the wall
"double downs", or taking just one hit in exchange for
doubling your bet. If you are looking at a hand of 12 for
instance, and it does not seem likely that the next card
will be a ten, take the chance for a double down.

The last couple of hands is where you need to be, so bet
conservatively so as to keep yourself in the game to the end
of the deck. By this time you should have a clear idea of
how the cards will be dealt, based on what is left unchecked
on your chart. Bet big when you know you have the optimal
chance of winning, and the minimum if the house has it.

When dealing with multiple deck blackjack, you simply apply
the same blackjack strategies as for single-deck, only to a
larger scale. The above chart is extended out for however
many decks are being used, and the cards are charted as they
fall. Most people play online blackjack the same way as if
they were in a live casino. And that is why the online
casino win at blackjack. Do not play swiftly, instead take
your time and chart the cards. In multiple deck betting, the
payoffs can be enormous, but you will need deep pockets to
maintain yourself until a 15 deck chart starts to show
trends.


Advanced BlackJack Strategies

Like the doubling situation above, these are the hands that
will make or break you. There is one rule here hard and
fast: don't split 5s, and don't split 10s for opposite
reasons.

With the 5s you are turning a hand that should be counted as
a 10 and either doubled or hit into two hands of five each,
that turn into potential problems when decorated with
7,8,9,or 10. With the two 10-value cards, you are asking for
trouble taking a nice pat 20, doubling your original bet
size, and getting stuck with a 2-7 twice. If you don't think
this happens, ask any practitioner.

What you want to do is maximize your opportunities. Aces are
the cards that you do want to split, and this is a special
situation. With the Ace, in most casinos, you are allowed
only one card after you split them. Obviously, you are
hoping for a 10 on each.

The thought here is that if you don't split your Aces, you
have a cumulative value of 2. The danger here is that if you
draw 2 10-value cards in a row, not at all unusual, you will
bust. You are also trying to maximize your opportunities by
turning a single bet into twice that amount.

Insurance

The dealer will turn to you and ask if you would like
insurance if he or she is showing an Ace. Time-worn advice
suggests that because the odds of the dealer having a
blackjack are about 1 in 3, you answer no.

Insurance means that you are allowed to wager up to one-half
your bet that there is a blackjack or a 10-value card in the
hole. You lose the bet if the dealer does not have
blackjack, but get paid what you bet for insurance if there
is one.

However, there is some flexibility here. Suppose you have
played about a quarter of a shoe and you have noticed that
there have been very few 10-value cards seen (Note: it is
always a good habit to keep track of the cards that have
been played, if you can).

In this situation, you might elect to take insurance based
on your observation and the fact that the deck is rich in
10s. But generally speaking, it is wise to decline
insurance. Just wave it off.

Luck, Steaks, Charms, Incantations and the Doo factor

The old casino saying goes something like: "I'd rather be
lucky than good." I can personally attest to one incident
after another of players who made horrendous decisions
winning hand after hand, while sitting at the same table
with a player who has been around a while, but can't seem to
win on 20.

It happens all the time. Naturally, the problem here is a
momentary turn of events that one wouldn't want to count on
repeatedly. Anyone can get lucky, but it takes some
knowledge to be able to play and win on a regular basis.

Some people seem to be naturally lucky, while others appear
the opposite. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle. We
have our lucky streaks and times when we can't locate our
own toes.

If you are losing steadily at a table, don't stay. Take a
break to clear your head, go for a walk, change tables,
alter the situation. One response to this situation that
heard time-after-time is: "I'm due." That due factor has as
much to do with reality as George Foreman winning the Boston
Marathon. Its doesn't happen that way.

If you're on a losing steak, don't try to force it. Live to
play another day.

Money Management

Much is said concerning this topic, but little understood,
and less practiced. There are a cookbook full of recipes for
disaster known as betting systems, almost all of which will
lead to a precarious chance of risking more and more money
in the misguided hope of recovering some money already lost.


One of the more popular betting systems says to double your
bet until you win. Only two problems here: you might not win
until you hit the table maximum, or you might just run out
of money first.

Here's the scenario: you buy in for $100 at a $10 table and
lose the first hand. This system calls for you to put $20
down, and you lose again. The third hand now calls for you
to be $40, and you again lose. In order to follow this
betting pattern, you need to buy in for more money because
you've exhausted almost of your original buy-in.

So you purchase another $100 worth of chips and bet $80,
only to lose for the fourth hand in a row, not all that
uncommon. You are down $150, in just four bets. You buy $150
worth of chips, bet $160 to double your previous bet of $80,
and lo-and-behold, you lose the fifth. (actually you feel
like drinking one at this point.).

Buying in once more and betting $320, you lose that as well.
You are now out $630, and the thought of betting $640 to
make your original profit of $10 seems a little far-fetched
and illogical, but you so desperately want to leave the
table on a winning note, that you do it. And lose for eight
losses in a row! If you think it can't happen to you, think
again. (see the section on streaks.).

From your original $10 bet, you are now out $1270! Ouch! And
the table limit is $1000. Now what? You could slink away
with your tail between your legs, or go to a table with
higher limits and hope for the better there. With the way
your luck is running, you don't want to try crossing the
street in traffic. You may not make it to the other side.

The best money management system is time-honored and very
simple: Bet less when you are losing and more when you are
winning. Easy to say, hard to do. The casinos know that if
they get you in a place where you are losing steadily, the
chances are that you might start to "chase" your losses with
even larger amounts of money in an attempt to get out of the
hole you've dug. Advice: go slowly and don't try to hit home
runs.

If you find that you are winning on a steady basis, whatever
the reason, try betting a little bit more. There is a saying
around the casino: "I've won and I'm playing with their
money." It isn't their money. If you won the money, then it
is yours to keep, and any you lose will be coming from the
same pocket. Do you think the casino managers talk in those
same terms, saying to each other, "Ah hah! We won this much
today. Now we're playing with their money?!" No way.

Follow this advice: Leave when you have won. If you bought
in for $100 and you have doubled your money, take it and
run! The odds are with the casino that the longer you stay

Basketball sports' gambling is a game of skill and relies on a great deal of strategy, which must be used in order to win. The challenge is to gather and analyze as much information as you can about a game, weigh the probabilities of each team winning, and subsequently compare your opinion to the odds makers. Make the right judgment and you win. To keep the sports gambling simple and fun I am only going to cover straight bets. When gambling on a basketball game, there are two ways to place a straight bet within that same game. You can either bet the line also known to as the side, or how many points will be scored in the basketball game also known as the total. The Straight Bet is betting in its most basic form, which allows you to bet at given odds, upon a winner. The Point Spread can bet on one of two selections that have been equated through the allocation of suitable points. In the Point Spread the number of allocated points are shown with a + sign for the favorable side and a - sign for the underdog. In order that the better wins, the favored team must win by more than the Point Spread. On the flip side, if a bet has been placed on the underdog, that team has to lose by less than the Point Spread for the better to win.


Example:
Detroit
-8.0
Seattle
196


In this example, Seattle is the favored team to win the basketball game by at least 8 points. The underdog team is Detroit, where the listed total for the contest is placed at 196. If you take a straight bet on Seattle, you are betting that Seattle will win by at least by 8 points. Conversely, if you bet on Detroit, you are betting that even if they do not win the game, Seattle will not win by as many as 8.0 points. Say the final score was:


Seattle 100
Detroit 98
?


If you bet on Seattle, you would have lost, because they did not win by at least 8 points. All of these sports gambling sites offer some sort of bonus for you to do your betting online with them. They are not the outrageous bonuses that you may hear about, but are adequate to start you out. You have to be careful about sportsbooks that offer the unbelievable bonus deals because they may not be able to stay around for the long haul. In most of the sports gambling sites, if you wagered $100 on Seattle, your loss would be $100. On the other hand, if you wagered on Detroit, you would have risked the same $110 to win $100. In other words you are laying 11 to win 10. The odds in the sportsbooks are listed in this manner: 10/11. The left-hand side of the backslash is what you stand to win and the right-hand side is the number you risk losing.


In this basketball game, there was a total of 198 points scored. This exceeded the total of 196 that was predicted by the lines makers, so the game went Over. If less than 196 combined points was scored in the game, the game will have gone Under. On total points at most sportsbooks, once again, the odds are 11/10.


The loser pays more than the sportsbook pays to the winner is the net profit that the sportsbook would make. This is called the juice. When looking for a sports gambling site you should look for a small juice.
A line movement in any direction indicates which team that the people are betting more on. Sports gambling sites will move the line in either direction to try and entice a bettor to bet on the side that is needed to even out the amount wagered on both sides of the game. This is way the sportsbook makes its money on the juice and do not let movements in the line influence your betting. You do not want to place your wagers with a sportsbook that does not move its line, because you would then be dealing with a sportsbook that is gambling and that is poor money management by that sportsbook. Another reason is that you are giving incentives for many other players to stay in the hand. Therefore, you are giving other players chances to hit a hand that is better than yours. The best players bet just the right amount to get it where only one or two players call. In that case, your odds for winning are a lot better.



    3. Over betting. Some players get very excited when they have a good hand. They may go all-in, or lay down outrageous bets. Not only is it a waste of a good hand, but also people can start to read you. If you constantly over bet only when you have something, then people will always fold and you won?t win money. However, if you don?t have anything, then people will also know because you aren?t laying down monstrous bets.



    4. Finally, it is important to know when to fold. The best poker players are constantly watching other players, and guessing who could have better hands than they have. If someone bets high, and you know you have the best possible hand (which occurs rarely), then you can call. However, you need to know the odds of the other person having a better hand. Additionally, many new poker players call large bets when they don?t have anything, they just need a draw card. This is the worst type of gamble. The rest of the film is played out in telephone conversations and flashbacks as our increasingly frightened heroine tries to find her husband and unravel the murder. Stanwyck, as always, gives a terrific performance, managing to make her character both unlikeable and compelling at the same time. Lancaster, as her kept husband, is handsome, virile, and trapped all at once. The plot, expanded to a film from a tight, dark little radio play, wanders at times but gathers itself back together for a corker of an ending. --Ali Davis

    All film noirs need deceit, betrayal, dialogue hard as diamonds--and dames even harder than that. But Gilda is the only one with the dame front and center, and for good reason. Rita Hayworth shimmers in the 1946 classic, which spins on a tortured plot involving the title character (Hayworth); her imperious husband (George Macready), a ruthless casino owner and head of an Argentine tungsten cartel (!); and Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford), Gilda's ex-lover and now her husband's go-fer. But no one watches Gilda for the plot, except to learn that all the characters have secrets--perhaps even ones they would kill for. Hayworth captures Gilda's vulnerability beneath her devil-may-care front ("If I'd been a ranch, they would have named me the Bar Nothing"). Not to be missed: Hayworth's slinky striptease to "Put the Blame on Mame." --Anne Hurley

How can virtue triumph over evil? Well, as Petunia says, "Sometimes when you fight the devil, you gotta jab him with his own pitchfork." Debuting movie director Vincente Minnelli (An American in Paris, Gigi) and stars Ethel Waters, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are more than a match for the devil in this musical treasure. With a soundtrack of dazzling standards including Taking a Chance on Love and Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe, Cabin in the Sky is a joyous classic.
